How EMDR Works

Marissa discusses how EMDR Therapy enables the mind to reprocess traumatic memories, helping patients find neutrality through a guided journey within a safe environment.

How EMDR Works In Virtual Therapy Sessions

In virtual EMDR sessions, you meet with your therapist over a secure video platform. Using bilateral stimulation—eye movements, sounds, or tapping—you are guided to safely reprocess painful memories. You don’t have to retell every detail of your trauma; instead, EMDR helps your brain naturally resolve “stuck” memories so they no longer trigger overwhelming emotional or physical responses. EMDR is highly effective online evidenced by past clients success virtually doing EMDR after also doing it in-person.

The History of EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) was developed in the late 1980s by psychologist Dr. Francine Shapiro. In researching bilateral eye movement during R.E.M. sleep, she discovered that guided eye movements could reduce the intensity of painful memories. Since then, EMDR has become one of the most widely researched and effective trauma treatments available. Organizations such as the World Health Organization, the American Psychiatric Association, and the Department of Veterans Affairs now recognize EMDR as a leading evidence-based therapy for trauma and PTSD.

Why EMDR Is So Effective

Trauma can remain trapped in the brain, keeping you locked in patterns of fear, anxiety, or hypervigilance. EMDR works by stimulating both sides of the brain and activating your natural healing processes. As memories are reprocessed, they lose their emotional charge. This means you can remember what happened without reliving the pain.
Clients often report dramatic improvements including reduced anxiety, fewer flashbacks, better sleep and an overall sense of freedom from the past.

My Experience Using EMDR With Clients

I have seen firsthand the transformative power of EMDR. Many clients come to me believing they will always feel stuck in their trauma. Through EMDR, I have watched them experience remarkable breakthroughs, sometimes after years of feeling weighed down by fear, shame, or grief. For some, it is the single most impactful treatment they’ve ever tried after years and decades of other therapeutic work. Seeing clients reclaim joy, safety, and self-confidence is one of the most rewarding parts of my work.
